Chris Maxwell can become Wales’ next great goalkeeper, says
Wrexham No 1 Sam Russell.
Maxwell wants to follow in the footsteps of fellow Llandudno
man Neville Southall, who won a record 93 caps between the
sticks for Wales.
Dragons youngster Maxwell impressed while standing in for
Russell earlier this season, and has established himself as
Wales under-21s’ stopper this season.
Wales currently have two Premier league goalkeepers in Hull
City’s Boaz Myhill and Wayne Hennessey of Wolves, but Russell
says in time 19-year-old Maxwell can force himself into the
reckoning.
“If he keeps learning he can go on to a high level,” said
Russell. “I don’t think Wales are blessed with too many
goalkeepers.”
“It’s not like with the England squad where there are so many
to choose from – and if Maxi keeps learning away there’s no
reason why he shouldn’t be able to achieve that,” he added.
