Chris Maxwell must
be ready to grab his chance says Brian Flynn

Chris Maxwell has been urged by Wales under-21 boss Brian Flynn to win back
his place in the Wrexham goal as soon as he gets his chance.
The 21-year-old has found himself playing second fiddle this season to Joslain
Mayebi as the Dragons chase promotion back to the Football League.
A spell on the bench for Maxwell – who hails from Penrhyn Bay, near Llandudno –
hasn’t affected Flynn’s faith in the glovesman, who is still first-choice keeper
for Wales U21s.
And the former Dragons manager says the young keeper (pictured) must stay on his
toes, keep believing in himself and be ready to grab his chance to oust Mayebi
from the No1 spot.
“Chris has had to be patient,” said Flynn. “At the start of the season he was
the number one goalkeeper, but Mayebi coming into the team coincided with a very
good sequence of results.
“The manager’s obviously going to try and keep the same winning team as much as
he can – but when Chris gets his chance he’s got to be ready to take it.”
Another young Welsh goalkeeper has left Wrexham this week, with 18-year-old
Danny Ward being snapped up by Premier League giants Liverpool for a fee thought
to be in the region of £100,000.
Flynn, also in charge of Wales U19s for whom Ward is first-choice keeper, said
the move was a good one for both clubs and for the teenager.
“Danny’s very talented, and it’s a great move for everybody concerned,” he said.
“He’s progressed really quickly – he was always a good goalkeeper but he’s come
on in leaps and bounds in many ways recently.”
